SPECIAL EDITION"ORIGINAL MATSON MENU DESIGN by EUGENE SAVAGE"(SHORT SLEEVE) This Aloha shirt from Sun Surf's special edition is reproduced based on vintage shirts. KAMEHAMEHA is a brand of Kamehameha Garments, founded by Herbert Briner in 1936. This “Matson Menu design,” created by the company, is a highly collectible masterpiece that every vintage aloha shirt collector would love to own. Today, its popularity continues unabated, and its market value keeps rising. From the early 20th century until 1969, the Matson Line operated a shipping route connecting San Francisco and Hawaii. Commissioned by the company, two artists—Frank McIntosh and Eugene Savage—created the cover art for the menus used in the Matson Line’s onboard restaurants. This piece is a highly polished work in which the menu cover painted by Savage has been reconstructed and masterfully transformed into a shirt. The textile design is attributed to “John McMillan,” but this is an alias of the renowned designer “John Meigs,” and at the time, he used both names interchangeably.
